New project - Painting a large figure!

As well as being into gaming I'm also a member of a figure club here in Atlanta (Atlanta Military Figure Society - http://www.atlantafigures.org/ .  This is a great group of people, men & women, who share their painting skills and historical knowledge on how to paint a wide range of historical figures using different painting methods.  The figure you'll see below is of a French Grenadier of the Guard by Stadden. 

It is a fairly large figure and my goal is to paint this in oils!  So I thought I'd keep a record of how things go.  First I cleaned up the figure and then primed it in a grey.  Next I'm applying acrylic paint to areas that will eventually be seen as 'white'.  One of the things that I was shown is that the cloth used in real life on a soldier like this was made of different material depending upon what it was.  The coat could be wool, the pants maybe twill or cotton or something else.  The vest, again something different which then leads you to the fact that these all reflect light differently.  So, rather than having one of the pure white looks I'm going for more of the 'what it would look like in real life' look.  I'm basing this figure off of the painting entitled 'The Sentry'

You'll see the differences in white on this painting and that's what I'll be trying to recreate with oils.  I start off with acrylic paint as a base but will then put the oils on top of that.  I'll keep everyone updated on my progress.

I have been working on a new project.  Something that I've always wanted to do and in previous posts I showed some other pictures of my 1806 project.  These photos are of a newer figure line that is starting out with 1806 Prussians.  The company is called "FG MiniZ Forgotten & Glorious Company of Art" (http://forgottenglorious.blogspot.fr/).  They are a French company and I think the miniatures they've produced are good and worth an investment from those of you who want to build 1806 Prussian units especially since the Euro to Dollar is at a good rate.

One word of advice when you get the figures home is to brush the musket barrels with a superglue to strengthen them.  I find them too weak and easy to break off but brushing them with superglue prior to priming and painting helps.

Back in from the cold

Hello All, Sorry for the long delay. From being unemployed to now employed for the last 7 months I seem to have lost the time to paint. What I'll be posting over the next few weeks are photos of my painted and unpainted collection. No, I'm not totally getting out of the hobby but I am going to cut back considerably on what I currently have. I just don't have the time or inclination to paint the large units and forces necessary for the gaming that I prefer. Plus, our group's attendance has dropped off so much that we're lucky to have 4 people (including myself) to game anything. So with a heavy heart I'm facing reality and going to focus on those things that we can do. Stay tuned for the different figure lots that I'll be making available for sale.

Selling my WSS collection

I am selling off my WSS collection of mainly Front Rank WSS figures. I have 19 French infantry at 24 figures each and 23 French cavalry at 12 figures each. I also have a Danish foot, British foot and horse, Dutch foot, and Bavarian foot and horse, all at the same mounting level. I also have 2 C-in-C bases plus 6 Brigadiers in blue coats. I'm not supplying photos of every unit, that would be too much but I am showing you a few of each and if you want to see a specific unit then I can supply that to you. Most all of the horse was done using oils so the colors are quite rich & deep.

Almost all of my units have oversized cloth flags from The Flag Dude and they look amazing. A couple units have GMB flags and a couple have paper I did up from Warflags.

Most all figures will cost $8USD apiece and a cavalry figure is made up of 2, the rider and the horse (the Garde costs more). I'm also charging for the flags as they cost $12USD apiece. So a typical foot unit with 4 cloth flags will cost $240.USD. I cannot offer 'volume discounts' as I did not paint these in volume. Shipping costs, if any, will depend on the number of units purchased.

More 1806 Prussians and WSS Bavarians

I've kept myself busy in between looking for a new job by continuing with my 1806 Prussian project. I'm working on the second line regiment in a brigade. My overall plan (really hope) is to paint up an 1806 Prussian division and then I could match it against a division from one of the Corps from the French. I know I'd need to have a few 'extras' on both sides to make it an interesting game but I think it would be fun. My plan is to use 'Republic to Empire' as the rule set to game with and I think it offers some really interesting possiblities for a close, tight game. Anyway on to the photos of the Prussians. This is the first battalion of I.R. 33 and the fantastic flags are those made by Adolfo Ramos.

Next are the WSS (War of Spanish Succession) Bavarians. I've had them sitting around for quite a while all primed and ready to go but I just felt that I didn't know what colors to use to get the sky blue (or whatever you want to call it) for the Bavarians. After painting up the 1806 Saxon Hussars I felt I'd finally found the right colors to use. I've not fully finished the unit as I'm waiting for flags. Adolfo doesn't make WSS flags for the Bavarians so I'll probably turn to The Flag Dude. Unfortunately since I'm unemployed I'll have to wait a few weeks for some additional funds to become available before I can order them. I'll order them using the 'cloth' paper he has which I think give the flags a really nice realistic look. So since the flags are not on the unit yet I've not mounted the standard bearers nor done the finishing work on the bases but at least you'll get a look at my interpretation of WSS Bavarians.

New 'Adolfo Ramos' flags - STUNNING

I ordered some Adolfo Ramos Prussian cavalry flags for my 1806 project and they just arrived. I am not disappointed at all in the quality, as my title says they are stunning. I ordered the 30mm 'complete' option for two reasons, I like oversized flags and I wanted a fully ready-to-mount flag. These are as close as you can get to GMB quality and you don't have to put them on the pole, he does it for you. The complete option also means that Adolfo will touch up the edges of the flags as well so you do not see the backside of the flags showing through. They are well worth the price so I highly recommend Adolfo Ramos flags and I hope he continues to expand his coverage within the eras he is currently providing. Now, on to the pics -

1806 Prussian Hussars

Given that I've have some spare time on my hands I decided to keep going with the painting of Prussian cavalry. This time I painted up HR#1 - Gettkandt, which saw quite a bit of action in 1806. I've still got a couple of touchups to do but the other 98% of painting is done.

Not sure which unit I should do next. I've Bosniaken/Towarczys primed up along with 8 to 10 Cuiriassier squadrons and to top that off I've got the 2nd regiment of infantry primed so I can work on my completing my first infantry brigade. Oh, I almost forgot about some artillerists as well. :) I've got a lot to choose from so I'm sure I'll stay busy inbetween the job searching.
